Freestyle ‘85 – Covent Garden, December 1985

25 August 2006 3,127 views 73 Comments

f.jpgI’ve had this heap of unlabelled video tapes sat next to me for months now. I could vaguely recall what was on them, but couldn’t be totally sure. Inquisitiveness finally got the better of me, and I dug out my old VCR from it’s retirement spot in the garage.

First tape in the slot, press play and straight in with a result … it’s (a very young) Mode 2 at Freestyle ‘85 talking about the Crime Time Kings. This footage was part of the epic ‘Get The Message‘ documentary made by The Artful Dodger back in 1994.

Freestyle ‘85 -Jubilee Hall, Covent Garden, London, December 1985.
A review of the event by Justin Onyera appeared in issue 9 of Street Scene magazine;

tca3.jpgIt’s a fairly cold Saturday morning and a strong cosmopolitan crowd of a few hundred youngsters have lined-up patiently outside Covent Garden’s Jubilee Hall. They’ve all come to see an exhibition of the best British graffiti art, break dancing and rapping. Under the banner of ‘Freestyle ‘85′, the organisers, Centre Promotions – a non-profit committee composed of some of the performers themselves – hope to ensure a more genuine insight into the subculture that grew out of the South Bronx, which has had more than it’s fair share of exploitation in recent years.

tca1.jpgThe proposed line-up, thought literally London dominated, is impressive; Sipho the Human Beat Box, Imperial Mixers, rapper Daddy Speedo, London All-Star Breakers, graffiti artists Chrome Angels and IDJ dancers, to name a few. Inside, the main hall is divided into two sections. Graffiti murals line the perimeter of one half, while the main focal point – the stage – occupies part of the other section.

tca2.jpgThe hall is now prominently full, the Imperial Mixers are warming up with some stabbing, jittery tracks and a crew are stabilising their filming positions. In the graffiti section of the hall, a notepad clutching group congregates around the Chrome Angels, seeking arty signatures from them. “We’ve been doing art for two years,” says Pride, “and have had an exhibition of our work in Paris and London. We want people to respect us for what we do and our main aim isn’t to make money, but to stay ahead.”

possee.jpgThroughout the afternoon, there seemed to be a lack of continuity in the performances. Sipho and Live to Break dancers had done their spots and during the long lapses, videos were shown or Sergeant V or Daddy Speedo tried to hold things together with some pleasant rapping. “It’s good now that rapper are rapping to the people instead of against each other,” noted 15 year old Sipho.

The main disappointment though was the non-appearance of the IDJ Dancers and London All-Star Breakers. They might have added more of the zest and created some of the high-pitched excitement the exhibition needed.

In essence though, the exhibition was a breakthrough. It highlighted at least the commitment of a group of performers to establish a strong footing for the subculture they’ve now become part of. And it’s that commitment and determination, you can not take away from them.

As an event that was so ground breaking, it’s not at all well documented. Junk from Second To None has put together a blinding page of photos taken during the event. A few screen-caps (and some extended footage for sale on DVD) appear on Aerosol Planet.

Here is a little bit more from the history archives. Enjoy.

21years on and it still has an important part in my memory.
Its what got me into the break beats and the graff. Never any good at the breakin though, but checked for it still.
Good to see some footage, although there’s not enough….. you would have had to have been there to really appreciate the influence it gave to many. I recognise a few faces in the clips, i was there all day and night but not in the vids.
Post up if you was there.

Yes that jam was strictly monumental. I came down from Nottingham, joined by the Rock City and Rockertrons crew. Without a doubt a landmark event in UK Hip Hop history. I remember Live 2 Break, Basil and Darnel plus Danny Francis blazing up that stage. everybody was on point with Whodini hyping it up. If anyone has the whole event on DVD, key me up. Thats history that needs sharing.

    One!

[..YouTube..] The video was done as a promotional, The event was set up by Sarg V, Spider, Budah (CFM), and various others. It ran all over the weekend with a preview then the main event in the evening. Cosmic, Custmaster Swift, Dj Imperial, DJ pogo, loads more during the day. The question is for the people who were really there who was the 2 NYC artists that played out the event?Ill tell you Master O.C and Crazy Eddie and Whodini. Grandmaster D set was on fire.

I was in London for about a year when this jam went down. I got to know Spider B (aka Dj Biznizz) he introduced me to most of the B Boys In south London. He took me to the centre in Charring Cross where I became involved in the organizing of the Freestyle 85 Jam. Canadian youth worker and B Boy Steve Leflore, was very central in organizing the event with the youth at the time. We all learned so much from the experience. And I’m happy that someone had the good sense to post this video. One day the footage from this jam will be available on line. So whoever has it get posting or do the DVD. UK Hip Hop needs it.

Not sure if I know you bro, but spatz was definately the place to be on a Saturday lunchtime . Most of my Saturdays from mid ‘84 to early ‘85 were spent either at spatz or the electric ballroom. I’ll never forget when in ‘84, run dmc turned up at the electric ballroom and rocked the stage. Before they run dmc rocked it, dj streetz ahead was on stage before hand cutting up the ‘Pleasure Boys’ tune by Visage – phat. Do you or anyone else remember the b boy jam at Jubilee Gardens on the Southbank in ‘84 (think) – wicked!

  • boatsy said:

Does anybody remember the b boy jam that took place at Jubilee Gardens on the Southbank in ‘84? And does anyone have any footage of it?

  • Jamal said:

Southbank 1984 !!!! Sound systems galore, Tim Westwood stage and Zaki/Goldie doing Graff, cherish those memories, do u remember the fight that broke out on stage with certain breakers and the one of them was ready to beat him down with the SL1200 !!! hawkeye sound was also there and the saxon crew passed thru that day. Heavyweight. No idea who has footage, probably Tim Westwood. What about the B-Boy jam in piccadily circus station in 86 !!! a sound system inside an underground station !!!!!

anybody remember the london glc hiphop jam in jubilee gardens southbank, in the summer of 1984, it was the biggest outdoor hiphop jam in london ever, well over 10,000s people attended, it was like a scene from the movie the warriors with all the krews around london and beyond congregated in one park to do battle and represent, the security could not control the crowds because the turn out was well beyond expectations, the atmosphere was electric sometimes volatile when fighting erupted spontaneously and tim westwood pleading with the crowd to get back behind the barriers, around the main stage were smaller soundsystems and tents with small circles and battles occuring. they say that acid rave united races and cultures but this was the first to unite way before acid rave in the late 80s. it was londons answer to the amphitheatre jam in wildstyle.. and when they dropped its yours by tla rock on the soundsystem.. that 808bassline just killed it…everybody went crazy!!! somebody must have this memorable event on tape somewhere.

Kickski…….there’s only one Kickski Love that I know…….D is that you? If it is then big up bro…..long time no see, speak or hear, happy new year to you sun! Your repsonses have have brought back some real golden memories, I can fully remember you hitting run with part of your leg at electric ballroom cos’ myself and TG watched it happen. Once run dmc walked through the crowd, we hot stepped it up to the front of the stage. When run dmc eventually came out on stage, TG hit the record button on his sony cassette walkman and held it up toward dmc as he walking across to our side of the stage only to (would you believe it!) try and grab the walkman from TG. The boucers tried to rush TG for the tape but luckily he changed the tape for a blank one before they got to him but it was all good…..proper memories! Somewhere in my loft, I still have the original flyer for that day…..£1.75 to see run dmc live on stage in ‘84….touch!!!! Many a time was spent at yours in the ‘Stow’ listening to you knock out beats on your E-MU SP12, regardless of who’s in hip hop nowadays I reckon there’s still space for you to blow the afro dust off your tools and start knocking them beats out again…..definately up there with the Dilla’s(RIP), Pete rock’s, 9th wonder’s etc of this world.

    hip hop forever

    peace out

Dan, I hear ya sun…….I’ve still got a couple of your beats on tape. I was looking through my vids and found a tv doc called Bacchanal ‘84, can you remember it?…..it featured two b boys crews Micron and Sidewalk (with a very young Richie Rich) in it……pure gold!!! I saw simon back in 2008 and he told me he still pops now and again. I also bumped into david mitchell, he ran me off a copy of ‘Beat this: A hip hop history’ on dvd, he also still pops and keeps in contact with lloyd harvey…..have you seen him doin’ his bit on youtube under lloydazoid? I’m out in colchester these days but still go back to the stow to see ma folks. Tune wise, mostly collecting soul & funk and battle breaks that I missed out on. As for hip hop, at the moment just collecting anything that’s; j dilla, pete rock, kev brown, declaime, kankick, mf doom, madlib, quasimoto, 9th wonder, lone catalysts, j rawls, rjd2, people under the stairs, ge ology, scienz of life……I could go on bro but when you get the chance check them all out if you haven’t done so already.
